Introduction

Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, also known as Babasaheb. He was born on 14th April 1891, in a Mahar family at Mhow in Madhya Pradesh, central India. His father Ramjirao was a Subedar major in the military. He lost his mother at the age of 5. His family belonged to a Marathi background from the town of Ambavadi in the Ratnagiri district of the Modern day of Maharashtra.

Family background

They were from the Hindu Mahar caste, who were treated as untouchables. Though he attended the school he was given no attention by the teachers. He was also not allowed to sit in the class. He faced many social and financial obstacles. Ambedkar passed his matriculation in 1907 and entered the University of Bombay, becoming one of the first untouchable origins to enter a college in India. he was married to nine years old girl, Ramabai in 1908. She was from Dapoli.

Education

Bhimrao passed his B.A examination from the Elphinstone College in Bombay. Then he went to America and joined the Columbia University. He completed his M.A. and PhD. Dr Ambedkar Studied law in England. In 1923, he returned to India as a barrister. He started his practice at Bombay high court. In 1935, Ambedkar was appointed as the principal of the government law college for two years. Then he founded the independent labour party in 1936, which won the 15 seats in the year 1937 elections to the central legislative Assembly. He was appointed as the chairman of the constitution drafting Committee.

Career

He started working for the welfare of depressed classes. He tried and took efforts to spread the education among the people and improve their economic condition. He also gave to his people the self-respect, dignity and most importantly moral courage to fight. He strongly fought against the caste system in India and Published a book named, “Annihilation of caste” in which he strongly criticized the then existing discrimination in Indian society.

Dr Ambedkar was greatly influenced by three great men, Lord Buddha, Kabir and Jyotiba Phule. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar is popularly known as ‘Babasaheb’. He Played a great role in framing the Indian Constitution. So, he is called the father of the Indian constitution. Dr B.R. Ambedkar was the first law minister of independent India. He was well known for his work as a lawyer, economist, politician and professor. For his contributions, he was awarded ‘Bharat Ratna’.

Death

He was suffering from diabetes since 1948. From the month of June to October in 1954. He was bedridden owing to the clinical depression and failing eyesight. He died in his sleep on 6th December 1956 at his home in Delhi. The memorial for Ambedkar was established in his Delhi house at 26 Alipur Road. His birthday is celebrated as the Public holiday known as Ambedkar Jayanti. There are many public institutions are named in his honour, such as the Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar open university in Hyderabad, B.R. Ambedkar Bihar University, Muzaffarpur etc.

On the anniversary of his birth and death and on Dhamma Chakra Parvartan Din, 14th October at Nagpur at least half million people gathers to pay homage to him at his memorial in Mumbai.

His message to his followers was “Educate!!!, Organize!!!, Agitate!!!”
